This week marks the debut of artist Emile-Samory Fofana’s groundbreaking collaboration with Adidas, showcasing more than just a new football kit. This initiative symbolizes an effort to unite people and transcend cultural barriers.
The centerpiece of this collaboration is an all-white qamis, or thobe, featuring Adidas’s iconic three stripes in gold along the sides. The garment extends to the ankle, blending traditional design with modern sportswear aesthetics.
Fofana introduced the project on social media, sharing: “We developed a functional football qamis for you to be as comfortable on the pitch as on a prayer mat.” He emphasized the garment’s versatility, capturing the essence of a “man who can do both,” and expressed his satisfaction with the innovative fusion.
While Fofana has previously created qamis garments incorporating Adidas stripes, this is the first time his work has received official endorsement from the sportswear giant. A passionate football enthusiast, Fofana is of Malian heritage and was raised in Paris. His artistry delves into the intersection of sport and culture, particularly within the context of Mali.
The qamis, a long, ankle-length robe, is commonly worn in the Middle East and parts of West Africa. Designed to fall straight from the underarms to the floor, it pairs perfectly with simple sandals, offering both comfort and practicality in hot climates. Additionally, the garment upholds the principles of modesty in accordance with Islamic tradition.
